How To Make A Self Soothe Box For Your Mental Health

Make self-care easy when you are feeling low, by creating a self-soothe box for your mental health.

A self soothe box is the perfect go-to for when you need immediate mental health support.

What Is A Self-Soothe Box?

A self-soothe box contains everything you need to complete self-care.

It can be there for you everyday or quietly sit in the background, as a safety net for coping in times of crisis.

Having a self-care kit makes it easy and convenient to help yourself on difficult days.


Before I made my self-soothe box, I really believed that nothing helped me and I would practically have an empty box.

Though with time and as I thought more about it, there were a lot of things with the potential to help me.

I learnt that I was worthy of helping myself and using this as a way of coping, when I feel myself slipping into an episode of depression.



Creating Your Box

Firstly, find a medium size box and decorate it with pictures, drawings and sequins if you like to get creative.

Next, gather items to put in your box which provide you with comfort and happiness.

Over time I filled my self-care box with small items that help me in different emotional states, and items which appeal to each of my senses.

Fast forward to 2020: my box is overflowing and I have a limitless amount of support made by and for myself.

It is important to cater for the majority of emotions that you feel, so your box can help you in multiple situations.

By including at least one item that appeals to each sense, it’s likely that you’re covered!


Most of the items in my self-care box are small and transportable. Therefore, I can always keep the box with me and have things close to me that I know help me in difficult situations.

If you can’t bring your box with you, then you can still take a couple of things from it to support you during the day.



Now you have your own self soothe box and another coping mechanism to support you in your mental health recovery.

A final reminder: self-care is an investment, not an expense.

    I don't have a self soothe box but this has really made me consider getting one now or at least making use of my senses around me. I've already done smaller things like put up photographs and put fragrances in my room but I would quite like to get a fidget cube because they're so cool! Meg x

    I love this idea! I've never heard of this before and is actually something that instantly appeals to me. Having something that when I don't know what it is I need to cheer me up or make me feel safe and settled when I'm having a bad day, I can turn to a box of sensory items and favourite things that at least one of the things will help. The glitter jar in my box is one of my favourite things to help me on a bad day. Watching the coloured glitters spin inside and slowly fall is so calming, it reminds me of a snow globe but the glitter makes it so much more mesmerising and fun. It is something that can very easily bring me back to the present moment and it is really fun to make too. I have used the rescue remedy for about three years now. It is something that I find really helpful because it kicks in quite quickly and helps me to relax when my anxiety is high, I use it mostly when I do public speaking or have exams coming.     I've done something like this for a long time. I have a box where i keep all of the things I've collected from different places I've been or experiences I've had. Just opening the box brings back memories of happy times. It's a great way to escape for a little while, to know that there will be good times again.

    Some great ideas here. I have had depression and I also have anxiety. I have a ‘happy place’ that I go to when I feel anxious. White noise helps me a lot too as does meditation and hypnotherapy.

    This is such a great idea. I am definitely going to try it out. I once kept an empty packet of sweets in my desk drawer at work, whenever I felt on edge I would smell the bag which had the most amazing smell, it worked great for me. I must create a handbag version of this box.

    Such a lovely article! I am going to share this with my sister who suffers from mental illness and schizophrenia.     This is such a wonderful idea! I love your suggestions for it. I make a kit for myself every time I take a flight because sometimes flights make me feel anxious. I always take rescue remedy, soothing music and good headphones, a good book I can sink into, thinks that allow e to “escape” the situation that makes me anxious. I loved reading the interview with Kerry. Thank you for this post.

    This is such a good idea! My therapist teaches me coping skills to help deal with my anxiety but having a box filled with tactile objects to deal with all of your senses is genius. It’s like an IRL grounding technique. Brilliant!!

    This sounds like such an amazing idea and I can imagine it has helped so many people in need! Self-care boxes are always something I hear so much about so to know there is already pre-made ones available to people in so helpful. Sometimes when you’re in a dark place or in a crisis mode, you don’t have the ability to put together you’re own box, so having something on hand like this service is an amazing shout xx

    Great post, I had a self-care box filled with candy and movies. Movies were/are a great way to distract myself from my anxiety. I don’t have the box anymore, but I have my own rituals when I am feeling down (meditation, take a nap)

    I’ve heard of self soothe / care boxes before and it really is something I need to try. At the moment I have a couple of soothing items in my handbag, my fidget cube and some lavender scented hand gel.

    what an amazing idea, Casey!! I love the idea of the box of distractions but what I like even more is how you turned it into a real initiative to send to people – I think it’s such a wonderful idea and it’s actually inspired me as I’d love to create a few of these, and mail to some friends… I’ve had this idea for a while that I haven’t fully fleshed out that I want to start a letter writing program for whoever wants to get one, and wondering if there’s a way to implement something like this too.

    I never really had anxiety before but have been suffering from it since experiencing pregnancy loss in the fall of 2018 – also, now of course, like so many of us I’m having it a lot more than ever, in waves – I don’t have a box but I have been doing certain things w/ items that would be in one ; journaling for one. I do want to get crystals but dont want to just buy them to buy – would rather understand better which ones might work.

    Anyway, beautiful piece, and congrats on your success in this arena – maybe we could somehow collaborate in the future
